# Timers and tasks

Delayed and repeating script tasks that run on the game thread.

`tasks()` is the script scheduler. Use it when an action should run after some time or repeat on a period. Quick keeps track of time, and tasks run on the game thread, so you can work with the world and rendering from them. When the script is disabled, all its tasks are cancelled automatically.

```java
tasks().after(500L, () -> chat("half a second passed"));
int id = tasks().every(1000L, () -> chat("another second"));
tasks().cancel(id);
```

`after`, `every`, `repeat` and `soon` return a task id that you can pass to `cancel`.

| Method                        | Type      | Description                                           |
| ----------------------------- | --------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| `after(millis, body)`         | `int`     | once, after a delay                                   |
| `every(millis, body)`         | `int`     | forever, with a period                                |
| `repeat(millis, times, body)` | `int`     | `times` times, with a period                          |
| `soon(body)`                  | `int`     | once, on the next frame                               |
| `cancel(id)`                  | `boolean` | cancels a task                                        |
| `cancelAll()` | `int` | cancels all tasks and returns how many were cancelled |

Time is given in real-time milliseconds, not ticks. If the server lags, the period does not stretch. If you need to count ticks, count them yourself in `onTick()`, as in [the first script](/en/start/first-script.md).

If a task throws an exception, the same thing happens as in any callback: the script is disabled and the reason is written to the console.

Scripts have no threads of their own: `Thread` and `java.util.concurrent` are closed. Do background work with tasks or on ticks.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.quickclient.cc/en/extras/tasks.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
